What is Holistic Mental Health

Holistic mental health and counseling believes that we all have the wisdom necessary to work through our issues to lead us back to our natural state of health and wellness. It encompasses the mind, the body and the spirit to encourage a sense balance and well being.

Traditional psychotherapy believes that symptoms are the problem therefore the psychotherapist goal is to eliminate symptoms, holistic counseling believes if there is an issue it’s in the tissue, and seeks to understand the message behind the symptoms.

Counseling looks back at things and holistic mental health is mindful. It tries to keep you present. In addition, traditional counseling can keep you stuck. Holistic mental health is motivational, inspiring, positive, and driven.

Holistic mental health offers a drug free way to feel better. It looks beyond medications and helps the client connect with alternative mental health therapies like health, nutrition, spirituality, and can help change lifestyle habits to achieve optimal psychological functioning.

Depression is not is not a Prozac deficiency nor is anxiety a Wellbutrin deficiency. It doesn’t mean our body is deficient of an antidepressant or anxiety medication.  It is a warning sign that something isn’t right—physically, mentally or spiritually.

Addressing mental-health issues holistically means being able to look at the system as a whole. Clients have an array of options in holistic mental health and are empowered with the fact that they have a choice in their treatment option. The client as well as the holistic healthcare provider work together as a team to make sure the body, the mind, and the spirit is being treated as a whole.
